Podcast Episode 02 - Handling the Sacred Cows in Your Church

1/22/2013

Have you ever been trampled by a sacred cow in your ministry?  I remember in January of 1999 our church announced that the upcoming Sunday evening service would be cancelled to make room for a Super Bowl party.  This party would be an outreach to invite friends – you know, you’ve all done it by now.  The following Monday morning, a couple (who had been members for over 20 years) stopped by the church to inform us that they would no longer be attending and that they wanted their $3,200 offering check from the day before… back!  Sacred cow?  Evening service!

Another couple I visited asked if we were going to start singing more hymns on Sundays. I told them that we would likely sing less hymns over time.  “Okay, thank you.  We will begin going to another church then.”  Sacred cow?  Hymns!

Another person left our church when I stopped wearing a coat and tie on Sunday mornings.  Another sacred cow.

Sacred cows can be buildings, church furniture, service times, platform arrangement, Bible versions, pastoral visits, and even dress codes.  How can we as pastors of 200churches change these areas while avoiding stepping and slipping on those fresh, steaming cow patties in our churches?  After slipping and sitting in too many of them, I have some ideas for properly killing a sacred cow.

But first, consider these thoughts:
  • Some sacred cows should be kept and not killed.  They are sacred for a good reason.
  • Some should be fed, because the timing is not right for their demise.
  • Some need to be butchered, processed, and packaged right now!

So, for those in the third category, here are a few questions you should ask:

  • Am I clear on the why? Why exactly am I trying to get rid of this item, program, or practice? How is the mission/vision of our church advanced by my action/decision?
  • Have I done my research? Do I know who started it, made it, or gave it? Who values it most? Who benefits most if it is kept and who is hurt by its loss?
  • Have I communicated with the key people that this sacred cow killing will affect?  Have I told them what I want to do and why? Have I truly listened to them and received their input, even if I don’t act to their liking?  In terms of communicating in this context, the best surprise is no surprise!
  • Have I received buy-in and consensus from leadership and the main players? Do I have the support of leadership in my church – both official and unofficial leaders, those leaders with a title, and those leaders without a title.
  • Am I working with my church family and not against them? Am I “going it alone”? Do my people feel like we are in this thing together, or that I am just trying to further my own agenda at their cost?

As pastors of 200churches, our people should know how much we love and value them, but also that we are committed to killing sacred cows if they are in the way of us accomplishing our Jesus-mandated mission. For 200churches, the only thing more important than our people is our God-given purpose called the Great Commission.  If a sacred cow is in the way, the most important question we can ask is: medium, or well done?!

Enjoyed it. Two guys who know very little about real cows. We could get both of you some plastic sleeves at Trans Ova to learn about cows. Have a great day.

UPS, huh? No wonder you two "deliver" such great messages!

I have always called them landmines, not sacred cows. Cows suggest living and the possibility of movement to better pasture. Landmines have blown up in my face before, and the shrapnel effect is never pretty or helpful. Still, have learned much about defusing the mines..

Mike - absolutely - some sacred cows are landmines for sure! That is a good analogy. I can see another podcast episode some day on the topic of the "Top five ministry landmines". Thanks for your input Pal!
