Episode 50 - Training & Mentoring Leaders with Dan Reiland

12/25/2013

Merry Christmas from Jonny and Jeff to YOU and YOUR FAMILY! We are finishing up our first year of the 200churches Podcast and we could not be more happy and fulfilled! We've been able to share our hearts with you and encourage you as another small church pastor - and we hope that our blog and podcast has been exactly that - ENCOURAGING!
Picture
Today is Christmas Day, and we give you the final installment of our very long conversation with Dan "The Man" Reiland, aka, The Pastor's Coach. We used Dan's book, Amplified Leadership, as the basis for five podcast episodes, and if you haven't read it yet, click here and buy it for Kindle on Amazon. It would make a great pastoral ministry project for you for 2014 - to read and implement its principles into your 200church ministry. Read it with your ministerial group or pastor's fellowship and grow together!

We reference a short video by Michael Hyatt in this episode, where he explains the power of S.M.A.R.T. goals. You can find that by clicking here or on the picture below. We said on last week's episode that everyone knows what S.M.A.R.T. goals are, so we did not want to spend time talking about them. Then this week we received Michael Hyatt's video and we knew we needed to share it with you!

PLEASE NOTE, this link is to Michael's landing page for his course called "5 Days To Your Best Year Ever." He offers three free videos and the second video is a great description of S.M.A.R.T. goals. To get the free videos, you just have to enter your email address. Michael absolutely promotes his course on the first and last videos, and while we think it would be a great course for a leader to take, we are not promoting it, nor is this an affiliate link for Michael... just a good suggestion!

On January 3 we start back up with our regular blog posts, sharing with you through blogging in a way that will be a step up from this past year. We hope you engage us and that we can make each other better as 200church pastors. We have finished our fall semester courses and are enjoying a two-week rest from academia!

Enjoy Episode 50 with Dan Reiland. We know you will! Next week, we will have Karl Vaters join us for the first episode of the New Year... can't wait!

Episode 49 - Small Church Pastor To-Do and Not-To-Do Lists for 2014

12/18/2013

We are one week away from Christmas, so... Merry Christmas to all!! In today's podcast we listen to a short, three minute, leftover clip from our conversation with Dave Jackson, from SchoolofPodcasting.com. Jonny tells Dave how 200churches started almost one year ago. We began in January, and in December we are going strong - and that is a rockin' feelin!! In this podcast, and in light of starting a new year, we talk about things we should start, and things we should stop...
Picture
We talk about two things in this podcast that we want to link to:

A blog post from January that talks about the Lone Ranger... well, after looking, it actually does not mention the Lone Ranger, but it does talk about getting others involved through delegation!

A YouTube video with Bob Newhart called: Stop It!!

Here is an outline of today's episode, but as usual, there is so much more in the actual audio!

What to START, and what to STOP!

1. What do you need to STOP in the New Year? so that you can ask the second question...
2. What do you need to START in the New Year?

Let's think about the FIRST question, What do you need to STOP in 2014?

How will you stop it? (You need to define "it")
  • Will you just QUIT? Let it drop? Walk away from it? (hopefully, not your whole ministry!)
  • Will you delegate it or train another person to do it?
  • Maybe you need to gradually taper it off or phase it out?
Think about what would happen if you didn't stop it...
  • Consequences?
  • Other missed opportunities?
  • Will there be other ministries that won't happen?
  • Will some people end up not being reached, ministered to, or engaged with?
Let's think about the SECOND question, What do you need to START in 2014?
  1. What will it take? What will it cost to pull it off?
  2. How will your daily schedule have to change? It will have to...
  3. What will it require from you - courage? Commitment? Intentional stupidity? Great faith?
  4. Who will you need to involve?
  5. How will you prioritize your goals, tasks, responsibilities?
  6. Can you incorporate S.M.A.R.T. goals? (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound)
Here's some suggestions for getting started:
  1. Come up with four goals you want to accomplish in 2014.
  2. Prioritize that list of four.
  3. Begin the highest priority goal in January, and ONLY that one goal!
  4. If you can consistently progress on that goal through January 31, reward yourself by starting on, adding, your second goal on February 1.
  5. If you can consistently make progress on those two goals throughout February, then add your next goal on March, etc.
  6. Remember, start small, and build consistency and enjoy progress. Much of the success and happiness is found in the journey and the progress.

UPCOMING PODCAST EPISODES:

Christmas Day - Part 5 of our conversation with Dan Reiland on the message of his book Amplified Leadership. Dan will be joining us every last Wednesday of the month throughout 2014. Dan brings very practical leadership teaching for pastors of small churches. Dan is the "Pastor's Coach" and writes a newsletter by that name for Injoy and John Maxwell. Read a recent Pastor's Coach article called "Big Ministry In Small Churches"

Here is how Injoy.com describes the Pastor's Coach Newsletter:

Pastor's Coach is designed to refresh, encourage, and equip pastors as they rise to the challenges in the church. Written by executive pastor and leadership development specialist Dan Reiland, Pastor's Coach addresses the thorny issues facing ministry leaders, and offers valuable advice to help pastor's lead effectively. Pastor's Coach puts pastoring in perspective, and offers a much needed reminder as to why ministering in the church is such an admirable calling. At INJOY, we have a deep respect for pastors and an appreciation for the care they provide. Pastor's Coach is one small way we can say thank you!

You can sign up to receive Dan's Pastor's Coach digital articles for free here!

New Year's Day - On the first Wednesday of every month we will be joined by Pastor Karl Vaters from NewSmallChurch.com, and Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in Fountain Valley, CA. On January 1, 2014 the topic of the podcast will be on chapter one of his book, The Grasshopper Myth - Big Churches, Small Churches, and the Small Thinking that Divides us. We will talk about the importance of how we view ourselves as pastors of small churches. Hey, are we really okay with that??

An Update From Jeff & Jonny - Merry Christmas!

12/16/2013

Jonny and I have been enjoying our time off from blogging during our Thanksgiving – New Year’s break… mostly. We both feel out of the loop with our online community. This has been our answer to the online addiction most of us live these days, especially those of us who manage or involve ourselves in online communities. We even found a few spare minutes to get in on the Bitstrips fun…
Picture
We had to get in on the fun...
However, we have been working the podcast circuit pretty heavily. We are lining up podcast topics and guests into 2014 and are excited about the future of 200churches. We’ve realized the area of small church pastor encouragement is wide open in terms of need. There are not enough people or organizations committed to the success and joy of small church ministry. So 2014 is full of positive expectations for 200churches.com.

The topic this week on the podcast may go in one of three different directions, so I am not going to preview it yet, but on Christmas day, Dan Reiland will be our guest for his “Part 5” on his book, Amplified Leadership. The next week, on New Year’s Day we will be joined by Karl Vaters from NewSmallChurch.com.

New for 2014, Karl Vaters will be our first week of the month regular guest and Dan Reiland will be our last week of the month regular. These are two very different guys who bring so much value to us as small church pastors. We will continue to focus on the equipping and encouragement of pastors of small churches on the 200churches Podcast. That will not change.

The 200churches vision statement is this – “Ministry Encouragement for Pastors of Small Churches.” That statement embodies what our passion and heart is for small church pastors – we want to breath life into their spirits, wind into their sails, and hope into their hearts. Small church pastors are changing the world one person at a time!

As we move into these last ten days before Christmas, we pray that the joy of the season, Jesus Christ, would fill your hearts and families to overflowing. And that you would pass that joy and love on to others as you lead, shepherd, and pastor the people in your community.

We’ll meet you Wednesday on the podcast, episode 49!

Episode 48 - Dave Jackson Talks Podcasting and Small Church Ministry

12/10/2013

Picture
Our gratitude goes to Dave Jackson, from the School of Podcasting, who took the time to talk with two podcasting newbies and offered encouragement, support, and affirmation. We only include a third of our conversation with Dave, which lasted almost an hour and a half. Dave spent the time to get to know us, coach us by giving us some podcasting tips, and just generally converse on small church ministry, life, and all things podcasting.

This is a very fun conversation that we think will encourage you in your life and ministry. He offers a critical analysis of the difference between his large church and small church experiences - so we say - "let's learn from what he says and seek to be better pastors, period." His evaluations really apply to churches of all sizes as we seek to love people, connect them to God, and graft them into Kingdom community.

Thanks Dave, for being a real friend to so many in the podcasting and Christian communities. You can also find Dave at www.feedingmyfaith.org as he shares his spiritual journey with his listeners on the Feeding My Faith Podcast. Here is the latest episode of Feeding My Faith at the time of this posting.

And... you can find him as the co-host, with Ray Ortega, on The Podcaster's Roundtable, a video and audio podcast where Ray and Dave are normally joined by Daniel J. Lewis from The Audacity to Podcast, as well as one or two other Roundtable podcasters they invite to talk with them. Here is their Podcaster's Roundtable YouTube Channel with all of their video shows.

Episode Note: Jonny was late joining Dave and I in our conversation, so I, as usual, mock him just a bit when he shows up. The real story is that he was being a good husband and father while Dave and I were shirking our responsibilities! :)

Episode 47 - Social Media, Leadership, and Productivity in the Small Church with Erik Fisher from BeyondTheToDoList.com

12/5/2013

Picture
Episode 47 of the 200churches Podcast is jam-packed with great content! Jeff and Jonny share some leadership lessons they've learned in 2013, as they reflect on their church's "Annual Meeting" and the transition into the coming year.

They also have a great conversation with Erik J. Fisher from www.beyondthetodolist.com. Erik is the Social Media Manager for Indiana Wesleyan University, involved in ministry in his local church, and the founder of the BeyondTheToDoLIst Podcast, which explores productivity... beyond just a "to do" list! He invites a myriad of productivity experts and gurus onto his show and provides very challenging interviews around the topic of productivity.

Erik's new book, Beyond The ToDo List - Goals, is available in both Kindle and Audio version for just $4.99! You cannot afford to not buy this book! (As usual, Jeff & Jonny receive no kickback if you buy this book - this is not an affiliate link - they just love the book and the podcast!)

Jeff's favorite episode of BeyondTheToDoList is #44 with Baratunde Thurston. If you think his name is interesting, wait until you hear him - he is outrageously enthusiastic and passionate and you will be left wanting more as the episode comes to a close - it is AMAZING!

This episode is sure to encourage, challenge, and further equip you as you provide pastoral care and leadership in your 200church. We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving - and we are planning some great podcast episodes for you in this month of December!
