Helen Phillips emailed us in November of 2017 to say the following:
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you both for your courage and faithfulness in standing up for, supporting and encouraging so many of us in 200churches... I would also like to thank you for always referring to pastors as both male and female and for speaking across the cultural divides as far as the Mornington Peninsula [here] in Victoria, Australia, where there are many small churches doing amazing things with few people or resources." Helen got our attention in subsequent messaging, and we asked her to be on the podcast. She graciously accepted and we had a wide-ranging discussion with her about her own life and ministry, women in ministry, leading and serving others, being a ministry couple, and healthy systems, cultures, and teams. The Venerable Helen Phillips is the Vicar of Mornington & Mount Martha Anglican Church on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, near Melbourne, which is in the far southeast of Australia. She is also the Archdeacon of Frankston, overseeing about twenty different parishes. Enjoy this conversation with Helen!
Dr. Cherith Nordling is an Associate Professor of Theology at Northern Seminary and the daughter of Dr. Gordon Fee.
Remember 33 episodes ago when Cherith Nordling came on the podcast and destroyed our brains with what can only be described as a "Christological Tornado"? Well she's BACK and better than ever - talking today about Theology, small churches, and the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. Cherith describes herself as an ecclesiastical mutt and if you listen to her story it will be hard to disagree! Still, she has seen the Spirit at work throughout church traditions and across the United States and around the world. Cherith's passion for the mission of God is palpable in this episode and her journey is sure to inspire you as you lead your church. Put your seatbelt on, brace for impact, and enjoy!
Marc Shefelton is the pastor at Buffalo Prairie Church in Buffalo Prairie, IL. When we sat down for lunch recently, he had no idea that I (Jeff) had my portable 200churches Studio in my computer bag and that we were going to record an episode together right away! Surprise Marc! :-)
But record we did. And I asked Marc about his first three years of pastoral ministry in this, his first church. This is an interesting glimpse into the life of the small church pastor. I was reminded of many experiences of my own in my early years of ministry. It's pastors like Marc who are going to take us into the future of whatever pastoral ministry is going to look like in the rest of the 21st century. Enjoy! |
