Episode 257 - How Small Churches Can Help The "Least of These" Discover Hope! With Robbie Robinson12/26/2017
Hello Pastor! On episode 257, Jeff had a conversation with Robbie Robinson, the Executive Director of Discover Hope 517 Ministries. Discover Hope is a faith based addiction recovery ministry designed to help people who need help!
Robbie knows a thing or two about addiction, incarceration, recovery, blessing, and HOPE! Robbie and Jeff sat down at 5:30am on a Friday morning for this recording, and it's an awesome episode that absolutely inspires HOPE! You can find Robbie on Facebook and at www.DiscoverHope517.org. Sometimes people who are right in our own backyards are hiding in plain sight when it comes to our attention and care, and that definitely applies to those who are incarcerated in our own county. Jesus once said, "I was in prison, and you visited me..." We hope that this conversation with Robbie Robinson will inspire you to take bold steps of faith in your small church ministry in 2018! Jonny is noticeably absent in this episode, but will be back next week - in full form! :-) Here is a recent video from Robbie. They are raising funds to relocate into a larger facility...
We love talking with real small church pastors on this podcast. Learning from the experiences of others who are "in the trenches" is what this podcast is all about, and we were very excited when we got the chance to talk to Mark Young about his long ministry career and what he's learned about authenticity throughout his time as a pastor.
Mark has a unique story and he shares with us about the hardest time of his life when he found himself not only transitioning ministries, but also going through another transition in life that he could never have prepared for. But through that hardship, Mark has learned about the power of vulnerability in ministry and has developed a heart for folks who are often overlooked in our congregations. Mark is the pastor of First Christian Church in Newton Iowa and has served churches in Mason City, Iowa; Lewis, Iowa; Clarion, Iowa and Clear Lake, Iowa. While serving in ministry Mark has also been chaplain at Fountain Lake Treatment Centers, Hospice of Wright County, I-35 Speedway, Iowa Speedway Skiff Hospice, then Mercy Hospice. We know you'll enjoy listening and learning from Mark as much as we did in the studio with him!
The number one thing that I HATE hearing people tell engaged or newly married couples is this:
"Marriage is hard work!" And I get it, that bit of "advice" comes from a good place. People who have been married a long time (I'm going on 10 years and Jeff is past 30) know that there are times in every relationship where things DO get hard and they want to prepare young couples for that eventuality. But it just sounds so HARSH. Marriage may be hard work, but it's also supposed to be fun, right? Well, Ted Lowe and the folks at MarriedPeople.org seem to think so! They have created some amazing marriage resources and have been working for years with churches and leaders to create curriculum that could be a huge benefit to your church. Today, Ted joins Jeff on the podcast to talk about marriage ministry in churches and his passion for seeing churches not always being REACTIVE to the hard stuff that comes up in marriages, but PROACTIVE about building good marriages from the start. If you've been looking for a great resources for married people in your church, don't miss this podcast and don't miss checking out MarriedPeople.org.
For the past ten years, Dave Jacobs has been coaching small church pastors through all of the ups and downs associated with ministry. There are issues that come up in small churches that can't be solved by the latest church growth book or mega-conference and Dave has counseled and coached pastors through them all.
After ten years of gathering ideas and advice, Dave has compiled them into a new book that will be a huge help to you in your ministry. On today's episode, Dave joins Jeff to talk about what drove him to write the book and some of the ideas that you will find inside. Dave has been an integral part of our podcast since we started almost five years ago and he continues to bring insight and wisdom that you won't want to miss. And... it's a little embarrassing, but the title of his book is... Naked Man Running: 100 Ideas That Work In A Small Church |
